China has reported the world’s first case of a human infected with H10N3 Avian Influenza in its eastern province of Jiangsu.

China’s National Health Commission ( NHC ) confirmed that on 1st June 2021.

The case detached in a male aged 41 and living in Zhenjiang , a city in the eastern part of the province, was an occasional poultry to human transmission.

Key points :

  • At this time, there is no indication of human-to-human transmission.
  • The risk of further infection with H10N3 is currently believed to be very low, with experts describing the case as “sporadic”.
  • The source of the patient’s exposure to the H10N3 virus is not known at this time, and no other cases were found in emergency surveillance among the local population.

What is the H10N3 Avian Influenza?

  • H10N3 is a form of Avian Flu or Bird Flu strain.
  • It is a low pathogenic, or relatively less severe, strain of the virus in poultry and the risk of it spreading on a large scale was very low, the National Health Commission (NHC) added.

Do we have a vaccine for humans against H10N3?

No vaccine against Bird Flu, not yet. Bird flu is usually treated the same way as the “ordinary” flu, using an antiviral medication like oseltamivir (Tamiflu), peramivir, or zanamivir.
